The Purple Files: A Late Period Coat for Morgan.
Recreated by La Signora Onorata Katerina da Brescia.
August, 2004

It is winter in Innilgard. Problem: My darling daughter does not like to wear cloaks. So what to do? A late period coat of course! I rumaged through my material stash and found some gorgeous tapestry remnants left over from garb made some years ago. It is cream with peacocks and 'pineapples'. (R)

Unfortunately I did not have enough for the sleeves, so I made the sleeves from the same cream tapestry I intend to line it with. I am hoping that two layers of tapestry will make the coat very warm for winter tourneys outside.
This winter has been one of the coldest here for years!

I used a very simple pattern and made it in size 4 (one bigger) so it will hopefully last next year also.

Having looked through my stash, I also found some purple satin ribbon, purple cording, wooden beads, faux pearl beads.
A plan was forming! I could trim the coat, make some purple buttons (as seen in Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion), hand-knit some cord to make the closures..... the more I think about the more elaborate it becomes... oh no!
I am glad I made the coat a size larger.

So here you have it, the diary of Morgan's Coat - completely made from stash - not a thing to be bought!

The Trim:

Making the buttons. A good website showing you this is Renaissance Tailor.

Finished!

L: the buttons and cord are made.
Above: Making the loops for the buttons. These were couched into position.
R: the (almost) finished coat. I just have to figure out what I am going to do with the sleeves. So back to Janet Arnold.....

The only problem now? I keep looking at that satin ribbon.... it is begging for some couched cord, don't you think . (Why do I do this to myself?)
